Add a personal touch and express your creative side by incorporating pergola garden designs into your home. Greenery is known to boost serotonin levels, improve ambience and positively impact mental health. When combined with an Archgola canopy, plants can transform a simple covered area into a lush mini garden retreat.
Why Greenery Enhances Outdoor Living Spaces
Plants are the most effective way to soften hard lines in outdoor areas. They are an inexpensive and stylish way to add texture and colour to a space. Beautiful foliage creates a pleasing contrast with everything from steel to concrete and timber.
Plants can also help reduce ambient heat and improve air quality, creating a more comfortable living environment.
By incorporating greenery into a covered patio, your space takes on a more flexible feeling, where entertaining guests feels just as natural as curling up with a book on a quiet Sunday.

Choosing the Right Plants for a Canopy Area
The first step towards creating an eco-friendly outdoor designis choosing the right plants for the environment. Consider shade-tolerant varieties for covered areas and low-maintenance options that require minimal care. Popular choices for canopy-covered spaces include ferns, palms, philodendrons, and hardy succulents for sunnier spots. Hanging plants such as pothos or ivy are ideal for vertical spaces, while Kiwi favourites like kawakawa introduce a native touch.
Mixing plant heights, with floor pots, wall planters and hanging baskets creates depth of field.
Pergola Garden Designs That Work with an Archgola Canopy
Here are some of our favourite pergola garden designs that complement Archgola canopies:
- Create vertical gardens along walls and decorative frames
- Planter boxes are a great way to create a natural partition between zones.
- Taller plants add privacy and depth
- Small pots set up around seating areas soften hard edges
Eco-Friendly Outdoor Design Ideas
An eco-friendly outdoor design should combine style and sustainability. Here at Archgola, we recommend planters made from recycled materials, responsibly sourced timber or natural materials like terracotta.
Planting native varieties supports local biodiversity and requires less maintenance, while composting kitchen scraps can further enhance the quality of plants in your space.
How Archgola Helps Create a Mini Retreat
An archgola canopy provides shelter from harsh UV and heavy rain, ensuring that you, your family and your plants thrive all year round. By reducing glare and excess heat, it creates a stable microclimate where greenery can flourish.
Our custom design services make it easier than ever to create retreat-style spaces. The canopy acts as a visual anchor for the space.

We had an Archgola Oasis installed over our home’s upstairs deck to form a verandah. Ricky and Evan and their team did a great job and we now have an extra 30 square metres of covered space for our house. The product matches our home’s exterior and looks great. The Ziptrak blinds are easy to use and effective in providing extra shading and keeping out inclement weather. We are also happy with value for money, having shopped around before choosing Archgola. The pre-installation process, including quotation, design, and getting a council exemption for a building consent, was handled professionally and effectively. There was a bit of wait for the product to be manufactured in Auckland and shipped to Christchurch but we were kept well-informed on progress. A couple of components were slightly damaged in transit but these were replaced before installation was completed. Installation of the canopy and the blinds both went well – the guys worked hard (both were big jobs) and they got it done promptly with great attention to detail and quality. A couple of post-installation fixes were promptly addressed. They respected our home and were a pleasure to deal with. Overall, we are totally satisfied and very happy with the end result. Thanks guys.
